The Workers’ Bowl* is just 4 days away! Funds raised will go toward training workers on their rights and how to be leaders in their communities. Julieta, a participant in this year’s Feet on the Ground leadership program (FOG), shared why she’s passionate about worker education and how she hopes it will impact more workers next year.

Why did you get involved with WAC?
I got involved with WAC because of an issue I had with an employer who owed me holiday pay. When I reached out to WAC, I found out it wasn’t just holiday pay—I was also owed overtime, vacation pay, and other rights I didn’t even realize I had. That’s how I started learning about our rights.
What’s something you’re learning that is helping you grow as a leader?
Through WAC, I’ve learned about my rights and the opportunities here in Canada. Now, I want the same for others in my community, especially newcomers. Everything I learn makes me want to empower other Latin people by sharing this information.
How do you think what you’re learning in Feet on the Ground will help your community?
Right now I’m being trained to help people who call WAC’s workers’ rights phone line with different problems at work. I want people to be treated fairly, and being able to support them as they defend their rights will make a difference.
Plus, as part of FOG, I’m working with two other people in the program, Valeria and Soni, to create a podcast. We want to spread awareness about WAC and workers’ rights so more people know where to turn for support.
Without WAC’s programs to provide space to learn and grow, we’d miss out on the creative and confident leadership of workers like Julieta. We need your help to ensure as many workers as possible have this chance. Can you donate any amount today? Every dollar counts, and donations of $10 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
*The Workers’ Bowl is a joint fundraiser between WAC and the Ontario Employment Education & Research Centre (OEERC), which supports community leadership development. All donations go to the OEERC Education and Leadership Fund for Workers in Precarious Employment to create collaborative community leadership development and educational projects with WAC.
