Wal-Mart employees across the USA are walking off the job today, one of the busiest retail days of the year. At over 1,000 actions that are taking place today, workers are demanding that Wal-Mart improve wages, working conditions and health benefits and stop retaliating against employees who are speaking out.
This walk-out is a continuation of a series of historic actions and strikes that have taken place this year, including a one-day work stoppage in a Los Angeles Wal-Mart store that spread to 12 other stores across the country. In several cities, workers are highlighting Wal-Mart’s use of temp agencies to lower standards. In Chicago, temp agency workers working at a Wal-Mart store have recently filed a wage theft lawsuit for unpaid wages and overtime.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the USA and one of the top low-wage employers. Wal-Mart workers’ inspiring actions are bringing international attention to issues facing precarious workers that are all too familiar to workers in Ontario; low-wages, no job security, and reprisals when workers speak up for better conditions.
As Wal-Mart workers build momentum, support for their actions is growing. Thousands of community members have joined striking Wal-Mart workers at picket lines across the country today and are donating to a fund for lost wages for workers.
We stand with striking Wal-Mart workers and their courageous fight for good jobs!
