Tragic incident highlights lack of protection on the job

September 19, 2012

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Jayesh Prajapati who was killed after being hit by a car at a Shell station on Saturday.   Family members of Mr. Prajapati have commented in the media that the cost of stolen gas had been deducted from his wages in previous incidents.

This tragic incident highlights an illegal practice under the Employment Standards Act that is all too common for Ontario workers, and not just for gas station attendants.  Workers’ Action Centre has also heard complaints from retail and restaurant workers about illegal deductions for cash shortages.   Workers often fear complaining about illegal deductions for fear of losing their job.

Workers need stronger protection from wage theft on the job, including the ability to make anonymous complaints and stronger protections against reprisal.

The OFL has launched a Bad Gas Rip-Off Hotline at 1-800-668-9138 to receive anonymous tips on gas station franchise owners and companies.
