Take to the Streets to Say NO to Racism

September 9, 2024

Workers’ Action Centre members are uniting against racism. We’ll be standing together for immigrant justice on September 15 and showing solidarity with the Grassy Narrows Indigenous community on September 18. Join us!

Unite for Immigrant Justice and Status for All

Migrants and allies across the country are planning bold actions from September 12 to 15 calling for full and permanent immigration status for all. The UN sounded the alarm when they recently released a Special Human Rights Report naming and shaming Canada’s immigration system, calling it a “breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery.”

That’s why on Sunday, September 15 at 1pm, the Workers’ Action Centre will be at Toronto City Hall (100 Queen St W), to unite against the racist, anti-immigrant lies that are spreading across Canada. Will you stand with us on September 15?

Migrants grow the food we eat, care for our kids and sick loved ones. They do frontline essential work from cleaning and construction to food services and gig work. We reject the myth that migrants are to blame for high prices, soaring rents and low wages that hurt all of us. Instead, we know that it is grocery monopolies, corporate landlords, and profit-driven corporations who are the ones to blame.

Below is a must-watch video by Migrant Workers Alliance for Change exposing the lies that migrants are the cause of the affordability crisis: Watch it on Instagram or X.

Walk with Grassy Narrows for Mercury Justice

The Indigenous community of Grassy Narrows has demanded mercury justice since a corporation dumped 9 tonnes of mercury into the Wabigoon river in the 1960s. And while the dumping of mercury eventually stopped, this same River is still being polluted to this day by the local Dryden pulp mill. As a result, the water, land, animals and people of Grassy Narrows have suffered from mercury poisoning for decades.

Stand up for mercury justice and join us at the Grassy Narrows River Run on Wednesday, September 18 at 12 noon at Grange Park in Toronto (Dundas St W & Beverley St).

Grassy Narrows community members will be traveling 1,700 km to Toronto where they will demand that the Ontario and Federal governments:

1. Compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis.
2. Respect the Grassy Narrows Indigenous Protected Area by ending mining and logging plans.
3. Support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done.

Check out FreeGrassy.net for more details as the event approaches.
