No consequences makes it easy to break the law

March 13, 2012

Gary speaks out… I moved to Toronto from Vancouver in October 2009, because my mother took ill. Since being here I have worked many different jobs and faced violations in all of them. I am sickened by it.

After working for a maintenance company for three weeks I did not receive a pay cheque. I stayed working for another two weeks because of the boss’ promise that I would be paid. In the end, I never received the money. I filed a claim with the Ministry of Labour in May of 2010. A year and a half later I was sent notice that the claim had been sent to a collection agency. I’ll likely never see the wages I worked hard for. What’s wrong in Ontario?

In June 2010 I got another job. This time I noticed I wasn’t being paid for statutory holidays. When I showed the operations manager a copy of the Ontario Labour laws, his reply was “we do not pay statutory holidays here”. I had to quit after constantly fighting for missing hours and public holiday pay. In July of 2011 I filed another claim for unpaid wages. Now I have two claims for monies owed to me. Welcome to Ontario!

Our society is crumbling from within, coming back to Toronto I see it on an all too frequent basis. It’s really sad. I say, do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
