Community protest after 5th temp worker dies at Fiera Foods

October 1, 2019

Take action tomorrow with Workers’ Action Centre and Jane Finch Action Against Poverty as we organize a Rally for Workers at Fiera Foods, the Toronto food processing plant where a 5th temp agency worker was killed last Wednesday. On Wednesday, October 2 meet us at 3:00 pm outside Fiera Foods at 50 Marmora Street.

Please share this post to invite your friends and community members to join the action, and also sign the petition. We are demanding that the Ford Government take immediate action to stop employers from treating workers as disposable. Local community groups and labour unions are co-sponsoring the action because we all know just how urgent it is to make our workplaces fair and safe.

“We’re filled with heartbreak and rage, because we know this death could have been prevented,” said Navi Aujla, a former temp worker, and organizer with the Workers’ Action Centre. “All 5 workers who were killed at Fiera since 1999 were temp agency workers, and this is no coincidence.”

In Ontario, the cost of injuries to temp workers gets charged to the temp agencies, not to the companies that hire them. Although Section 83(4) of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act was passed in order to close this loophole, the Ford government has yet to implement this legislation that would protect more temp agency workers from getting hurt or killed. Instead, since taking office, the Ford government has weakened workers’ rights by lowering fines for employers who break the law and allowing temp agency workers to be paid less than their coworkers who do the same job.

Community and labour groups are calling on the Ontario government to enact better legal protections for workers. They also demand that Fiera Foods be investigated for criminal negligence causing death under Canada’s Criminal Code.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 2 at 3:00-4:00 PM
WHERE: 50 Marmora St., outside Fiera Foods
WHAT: Rally for Workers at Fiera Foods

*Even if you cannot make it to the rally, please make sure to share this with your networks and sign the petition. Stay tuned for more details.
