The 12th annual Workers’ Bowl is only 11 days away! Our annual fundraiser with the OEERC* is what allows WAC to keep training workers on what our rights are, how to fight for them, and how to share that knowledge with the people in their communities who need it most. Each year, we’re blown away by the support of workers’ rights champions who help make the Workers’ Bowl a success.
Anjula Gogia, the event coordinator at Another Story Bookstore in Toronto, has been participating in the Workers’ Bowl for 12 years.

When asked why she shows such commitment year after year, Anjula said, “WAC is one of the most important organizations in the city. I have deep respect for the work they do to support precarious and undocumented workers, and to fight for wages workers can live on, paid sick leave, and better supports for workers across the province.”
Precarious work continues to spread across industries, impacting a wide range of workers. Any worker can find themselves in a situation where an employer constantly pays late, pays less than is owed, or doesn’t pay at all. Workers can face reprisals just for taking an unpaid sick day when their children are sick. Speaking out on your own, without a solid grasp on the labour laws and how to navigate them, feels like an impossible risk.
The Workers’ Action Centre is where workers, no matter their status, find out they are not alone and that they have more rights than they thought. Times are already hard for workers in precarious jobs when in the middle of an affordability crisis. It’s worse without guidance on how to protect your rights at work or recover your unpaid wages. That’s what our worker education programs provide.
So far this year, WAC has helped workers to recover over $136,000 in their unpaid wages through Defending Our Rights and Workplace Justice workshops. We are committed to training workers in the steps to help themselves and each other to get justice on the job.

*The Workers’ Bowl is a joint fundraiser between WAC and the Ontario Employment Education & Research Centre (OEERC), which supports community leadership development. All donations go to the OEERC Education and Leadership Fund for Workers in Precarious Employment to create collaborative community leadership development and educational projects with WAC.
