Workers’ Action Centre Mission
- To improve the lives and working conditions of workers who face discrimination, lack of protection, low-wages and unstable employment
- To challenge unfair labour laws and work for change
- To challenge employers who break the law
- To be an organization led by our members
Guiding Principles
(How we do our work)
- Maximum participation of workers facing discrimination, lack of protection, low wages and unstable employment – we believe that workers who are directly affected by discrimination and poor working conditions should provide leadership in our Centre
- Development of leadership – we are committed to giving workers the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to become leaders in our Centre and in their communities
- Action for Change – we believe that the laws covering workers don’t really protect us and the government is not doing enough to enforce the weak laws that do exist. The Centre is committed to finding ways to really change things for the better.
- Shared Learning – we believe that by sharing our experiences and helping each other, we can build a stronger movement for change.
Commitment to Human Rights
The Workers’ Action Centre upholds all human rights based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, citizenship, creed, receipt of social assistance, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, record of criminal offense, age, disability, sex, gender identity and expression.
In our work, we are committed to exposing how racism, sexism and other human rights violations are important factors resulting in poor working conditions and low wages. Human rights discrimination, harassment and barriers in the workplace weaken all workers’ rights and our ability to organize for fair employment.
