6th Day of Action – 6 million workers in Ontario needing stronger protection

December 14, 2012

“I’m a full time student juggling 3 jobs. I talk to so many people who are not getting paid stat holidays and who don’t know their rights. Being a student, we already have a lot of stress, if we question whether we are getting paid, we are put in this dilemma do we bring it up with HR or do we stay employed? I want to wake up and be happy about going to work. We shouldn’t have to worry about not getting paid. We should be respected for the work we do as young people.  I would like to see safe and respectful workplaces.” – Gurkiran

The majority of Ontario’s 6 million workers rely on basic employment standard legislation to make sure they are paid for their work.

Send a tweet or email to Minister of Labour Linda Jeffrey (@LindaJeffrey) with your message on how to stop wage theft.  Here are a few of our ideas:

  • Increase fines and penalties for wage theft
  • Publicize all employers who are found guilty of wage theft
  • Give workers 2 years to claim unpaid wages

Let’s show the Minister of Labour that with a few simple steps, 6 million workers in Ontario could have stronger protection against wage theft.
