What made you get involved at WAC?
A friend told me about WAC. As a newcomer, I thought it was a big opportunity to learn about work. I used to be nervous, afraid to talk, and questioned if I could do it! I thought I couldn’t explain things, but now I’m more confident. For two and a half years, I helped out and learned all I could through outreach events, worker meetings and workshops. Then I became a Senior Leader.
What are you learning that is helping your community?
I’m learning more about how workers can connect and use our power together. We have meetings every month and call the workers we meet during outreach. People are always asking about minimum wage and inflation, and telling us how hard it is to afford rent and groceries. People are really frustrated and in bad situations.
I deliver workshops in Bengali that help workers think strategically about protecting our rights. Hearing about their rights in a way they can relate to makes a difference. That’s why we do consistent outreach around Victoria Park station, to make sure more workers in the community get the chance to learn and empower themselves.
How has the Senior Leadership program helped you grow?
I have a great mentor, and now I’m learning to mentor other people! I’m organizing other workers to become leaders. When I notice that a WAC member is very active, I give them a bit more responsibility at our meetings and outreach events. It helps them build more confidence, just like it helped me. Helping others grow is helping me grow.
Sabrina and the rest of our Senior Leaders are inspiring other workers to become leaders in their communities, too. We are looking forward to inviting a fresh crew of workers to develop their leadership skills next year! If you haven’t donated to help fund our education programs yet, we hope you’ll contribute by Giving Tuesday and share this story with your friends, family and coworkers.
