We are grateful to have decent work champions who participate in the Workers’ Bowl every single year. Our annual fundraiser with the OEERC is the reason why WAC is able to train workers on how to deal with their workplace issues, connect workers with each other, and fight back against bad bosses. That’s why we need you to chip in to keep the ball rolling for workers’ rights.

Nigel Barriffe, the Vice President of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, is one of our dedicated supporters. When asked why he’s bowling to raise funds for WAC’s educational programs, Nigel spoke about the importance of workers coming together. “No matter what we do for a living or what language we speak, we work hard for our families. We all do better when we’re all in for all of us.” For decades, WAC has been a space where racialized, migrant and frontline workers come together, navigate confusing labour laws, and demand better. Especially during this affordability crisis, we must stand united. Our movement cannot afford to leave anyone behind.
And while Nigel is clear about the forces we are up against, he believes WAC has what it takes to fight for a better future. “Certain politicians and greedy lobbyists hurt everyone by handing kickbacks to the rich, defunding our schools, and threatening cuts to healthcare. We won’t let them divide us. I’m bowling because WAC helps improve the lives of people in low-wage, unstable employment. By joining together, we make a future where we all get a fair return on our work.”
And that is why folks like Nigel support the Workers’ Bowl year after year. Our decent work champions know that WAC delivers the kind of programs that instill knowledge and confidence in future worker leaders. Leaders who’ve faced precarious, unsafe and low wage jobs firsthand. And leaders who not only know about their rights, but build worker power in ways that resonate with their own communities.
