Many Workers’ Action Centre members have become undocumented and lost their status because of Canada’s unfair and racist immigration system. This has allowed bad employers to exploit us at work.
That’s why we need you to take two actions to fight back this week: Sign the Healthcare for All petition and join us at the Migrant Spring Rally this Saturday at 12:00 pm at Christie Pits Park in Toronto. If you already did these things, then it’s time to let your friends and family know why these issues are so important to workers and ask them to join you!
Healthcare for All
Healthcare was previously expanded during the pandemic because it was clear that none of us were safe unless all of us were. But the Ford government has quickly forgotten this lesson and cut the program on March 31, 2023. Now undocumented workers and their families are again denied basic healthcare.
In the video below, Maria, a personal support worker and Workers’ Action Centre member, shares her difficult experience seeking healthcare after a workplace injury:
Share on Facebook and X (Twitter).
Tell the Premier and Health Minister to reinstate healthcare for all.
Being denied healthcare coverage means undocumented people have to wait until their condition becomes unbearable and they are forced to seek help in the emergency room. This unnecessary delay causes needless suffering and puts a strain on our healthcare system.
No one living or working in Ontario should be denied the basic right to healthcare. The Ford government claims that uninsured people can simply visit a CHC (Community Health Centre) for free care, but that is not the case. As Dr. Nisha Kansal explains in a recent video, CHCs only have the funding to diagnose uninsured people. They do not have the funds to provide treatment.
As we approach the one year anniversary of these cruel cuts, it’s urgent that you share Maria’s story and demand healthcare for all.
Migrant Spring: Regularization & Status for All
Migrant organizing forced the Federal government to hear our demands for Status for All. In December 2021, they promised to create a program to give permanent resident status and equal rights to work and student permit holders as well as undocumented people.
Today, we are holding them to their promise and demanding the regularization of ALL undocumented people. We want a program with no exceptions and no one left behind.
So, let’s march together for Status For All this Saturday, March 16 at 12 noon. Find us outside Christie Subway Station or look for our banners in the rally at Christie Pits Park (750 Bloor St W). Together, we can win permanent immigration status for all.
