On July 28th, workers met with the Ontario Workforce Recovery Advisory Committee (OWRAC) to expose the low wages, unsafe work, and misclassification that workers experience through app-based companies like Uber, Lyft and Skip the Dishes.
The Workers’ Action Centre and Parkdale Community Legal Services call on the Committee to recognize that platform-based workers are not a new category of worker to be subjected to lesser rights! Despite new technology, gig workers are employees that deserve the protection of basic employment standards.
In our joint submission to OWRAC, we put forward that a just recovery for app-based workers and all essential workers must include the demands of the Justice for Workers campaign, including paid sick days, a $20 minimum wage for all, and laws that protect all workers.
