Enrico Miranda, a 57-year-old husband, father and grandfather, was the 5th temp worker to die at Fiera Foods (click here to read about his life). Last week, we held a powerful rally outside Fiera Foods to honour the workers who lost their lives working at the food processing company, and to stand with those who continue to work in unsafe and abusive working conditions. If you haven’t yet had the chance, please sign the petition for laws that protect temp workers.

Instead of shutting down production when Enrico Miranda was killed on the job, Fiera Foods expected workers to finish their shifts. Yet the company did not hesitate in cancelling shifts when they knew we were organizing a rally in support of their workers. It is a shameful show of disregard for workers to force them to work through a tragedy, but then tell them to stay away when the community comes to show support.
We cannot let Fiera Foods continue to treat their workers with such contempt. Please add your voice and call Fiera Foods at 416-746-8579 to demand that they:
- Pay their workers for the cancelled shifts on October 2nd
- Immediately hire their temp workers as direct employees, so that they will take responsibility for keeping all workers safe at their facilities. Enrico Miranda had been working at Fiera Foods as a “temporary” worker for 5 years before he was killed on the job.
We won’t stop holding this company accountable for its health and safety conditions. What’s more, it is unacceptable for any temp worker in Ontario to be left unprotected. Read our open letter to Premier Ford demanding that he sign and enact Section 83(4) by this Friday, October 11.
Section 83(4) of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act would make companies financially responsible for the injuries and deaths of the workers they hire through temporary agencies. Employers like Fiera Foods would no longer be able to disregard their duty to ensure safe working conditions for temp workers and all workers at their factories. Protection for workers is long overdue. All it would take to make work in Ontario a little safer is Ford’s signature on Section 83(4) today. Sign the petition.
