8th Day of Action – $8,000 in unpaid wages won

December 18, 2012

I worked 12 hours a day and many weekends looking after 2 young kids in a busy household only to face unpaid wages. But I fought back. I filed a claim against my former employer at the Ministry of Labour for unpaid wages. My boss was ordered to pay me almost $8,000 in unpaid wages, overtime, public holiday pay and vacation pay.

But my boss didn’t like it. He fought it at the Labour Relations Board. He thought he didn’t have to pay me when I worked on the weekend cleaning the house and looking after their dog. He also didn’t want to pay me for some of the hours I worked during the week.

But I won. The labour board said caregivers need to be paid when we work and cannot leave the house. The labour board ordered my employer to pay me more money for unpaid wages.
