Funding cuts to employment standards reversed: a victory for the fight against wage theft
WAC is thrilled to announce that—thanks to 3 intense months of pressure from our members and allies—$5.5 million dollars for proactive enforcement of Employment Standards have been saved from the government chopping block.
The McGuinty government promises to work with WAC and other community partners to develop a plan for how the money can best to used to prevent wage theft and better enforce employment standards.
The Ontario Budget 2012: The provincial government abandons its poverty reduction promise
The 2012 Ontario budget abandons the McGuinty Government’s poverty reduction strategy – a commitment to reduce poverty by 25% by 2013. A freeze on social assistance and minimum wage means that Ontarians with the lowest incomes will be dragged further into poverty. .
This budget will increase the growing inequality in incomes in Ontario and places the burden for cost cutting on those that least can afford it.
Workers standing up against wage theft win their wages!
Lilia had to fight for over a year, but she finally received a cheque for over $2,300 in unpaid wages and other benefits! WAC’s latest report exposes a reality of work where wages, overtime and vacation goes unpaid and people work at less than minimum wage. Based on a survey of 520 people in low-wage and precarious work, this study demonstrates that vital protection of core rights are failing people in precarious work.
